Featured Product of the Month!

An inline instrument called a “water cut meter” can be installed in the pipeline to continually monitor the amount of water present in real time 24 hours a day.
Water cut meters are typically used in the petroleum industry to measure the water cut of oil flowing from a well, produced oil from a separator, and crude oil transfer in pipelines, loading tankers and custody transfer metering systems.

What is a Pump?

A pump is a mechanism used to move fluids most commonly through pipes. Although most pumps are mechanical in nature, the mechanism they use is designed to push fluids from one location to another. Pumps are able to convert mechanical energy into pressure which is the driving force enabling the movement of fluid.

The most common mechanisms of a pump type are either Centrifugal or Positive Displacement

Understanding Centrifugal Pumps

One of the reasons why centrifugal pumps are so common is because they use a well known pumping option that has been tried and trusted for centuries. They are also easy to use and can be built to withstand a myriad of applications which are too many to name. The mechanism (using spinning to create a centrifugal force ) will take the lower pressure fluid at the inlet and create a higher pressure at the outlet. Centrifugal pump working animations are useful to help visualize this.  If you have even been in  a carousel spinning around, you will be familiar with centrifugal force and  having experienced centrifugal force firsthand, it is easier to understand from the animation why the inlet and outlet is positioned where it is.

Some other names for these types of pumps are vertical centrifugal pumps, horizontal centrifugal pumps, submersible pumps , fire hydrant system pumps, water pumps, wastewater pumps

Understanding Positive Displacement Pumps

These pumps of ten go by the name of “Gear Pumps” because they literally look like gears with teeth. When rotated , fluid will be pushed out with each revolution. These pumps are used a lot in applications where a viscous fluid needs pumping.

Welcome to the World of Pumps

Most people on the planet are only familiar with one type of pump. Pumps come in various types, sizes and shapes. Pump selection is actually an art for those who are tasked with choosing the right kind of pump for an application. The pump itself is not the only consideration in an engineering project because many of the more adept pump experts have to consider the process in which the pump is going to be installed in.

Pump Selection

Each company ,vendor or supplier of pumps will have their own selection criteria based on their experience and also what is available to them. Pump Manufacturers puts you in touch with hundreds of different pump manufacturers and suppliers so that you can ask them directly. Since there are so many different pump selection scenarios which depend on the process conditions, power available, power required, media type (liquid, gas or slurry) and control functions – it is best to discuss the specific requirements with the manufacturers themselves. Since we live in a world where technical resources are often scarce, the assistance that you need is not always provided by the manufacturers who also depend on suppliers, agents and dealers to provide assistance to the general public. This would also include pump maintenance companies and those with expertise in the supply chain. Pump Manufacturers connects you to those resources either internationally or locally.

Pump Education

Where is a good place to start learning about pumps for a novice. We would recommend that a good start would be to download a document that has been generously provided by The Department of Energy. Download the DOE Module 3 for Pumps.
